Back when I was a kid, going to the shop and buying a book was a glori ous weekend routine I was addicted to Marvel’s The Punisher , and my weekly trip to the comic book store to get my fix led to a lifelong enjoyment of comics, even if I still felt ripped off that I spent $50 of my hard earned pre-teen money on a bootleg copy of the Punisher movie with Dolph Lundgren, mainly because that movie was shit. What this has to do with Larry’s columns from 2001-2005 is pretty tenuous, but bear with me.
I’ve known Larry for something like twenty years now, and we’ve spent a lot of time talking about Star Trek , quoting Big Lebowski to people who don’t get the jokes and threatening fist fights with anybody who tried to argue that Deckard was a replicant or every starship didn’t have its own symbol. I’ve had to watch dozens and dozens of people who don’t get the joke rail at him on the internet, and I’ve got signed copies of Astronauts in Trouble on my desk. So while I may not be an expert in comics, I know my Larry Young.
And I love this book. These columns are pure Larry, and even more, they’re just … pure. This is 2001-2005 he’s writing in. Put that in perspective.
