• If the Defender suffers a Cata strophic Failure, there is no need to roll on the Damage Challenge. They take the full Damage (1 plus any modifiers) of the attack. ThE DAMAGE ChAllENGE W hen an attack succeeds the Defending Adventurer rolls a D10 Muscle Challenge (mod ified by any Armor or associated Skills or Advantages). NPCs roll the Defense Score in their statistics. • If the Defender wins the Chal lenge, they only take 1 damage. They got hit. They’re taking some damage, even if it is just a teensy eensy widdle scratch. • If the Defender fails the Chal lenge, they take 1 damage PLUS the associated Damage Bonus of the Weapon or Attack. • A Stunning Success means the Adventurer avoided all damage. • A Catastrophic Failure means the Adventurer takes an extra point of damage.
ThE ATTACK ChAllENGE I n most cases, an Attack Challenge takes place between an Adven turer and an NPC. Most NPCs under the Game Master’s control will not have Traits. Instead, they have Attacks and Defenses listed in their Statistics. The Adventurer or NPC initiating the attack is the Attacker. The Ad venturer or Enemy being attacked is the Defender. In an Attack Challenge, the At tacking Adventurer rolls an Attri bute Die associated with the type of Attack they are making. • Melee Attacks – Muscle (modi fied by Skills, Weapons, etc) • Ranged Attacks – Agility (modi fied by Skills, Weapons, etc) • Spellcraft Attacks – If the spell is successfully cast, it is assumed to have hit its target. The Defending NPC rolls their Defense statistic. An Attacking NPC rolls the Die (sometimes with a modifier) associ ated with their Attack. A Defending Adventure rolls their Agility (modi fied by associated Skills and Advan tages). If the Defender wins the Chal lenge, the attack fails. unconscious, frozen, tied up, etc) automatically fails this Challenge. • If the Attacker wins the Chal lenge, the attack succeeded. Move on to the Damage Challenge. • If the Defender wins the Chal lenge, they avoided the attack and suffer no Damage. • If the Defender achieves a Stun ning Success, they can immedi ately make a Riposte attack. CULLEN SAYS – These rules are presented as Adventurers fighting NPCs. However, there might be times when Adven turers fight Adventurers. There might also be future supple ments to this game that pres ents Advanced NPCS who are more developed and have statis tics. In these cases, it is easy to tweak the rules above. In an Adventurer vs. Adventur er scenario, for the Attack Chal lenge, the Defender rolls their Agility (plus bonuses). In the Damage Challenge, the Defender rolls their Muscle (plus bonuses).
